Rooted in island material, memory, and making, the studio transforms Bahamian wood into contemporary objects for the home, the desk, and the collector.
GensInconnus is a Bahamian design studio creating handcrafted wood objects, writing instruments, lighting, furniture, and sculptural pieces in Nassau, The Bahamas.
The Name
GensInconnus means “unknown people” in French. For the studio, the name speaks to the unseen hands, histories, materials, and stories that shape every object.
The name also carries a quiet sound play, echoing the rhythm and cultural presence of Junkanoo. Like Junkanoo, the work is rooted in transformation, rhythm, material, and expression, but presented through a contemporary design language.
Island Grain, Shaped by Hand
Every GensInconnus piece begins with the material. Wood is selected for its grain, tone, age, weight, and character, then shaped through cutting, turning, sanding, finishing, and careful handwork.
The studio does not hide the natural marks of the wood. Knots, grain movement, small irregularities, and weathered details remain part of the final piece. These are the things that give each object its own feeling, its own story, its own ting.
From the Yard to the Studio
Many pieces begin with wood that has a connection to place. A tree from someone’s yard, a salvaged offcut, a storm-fallen branch, or a piece of local material that could have been forgotten.
Gens Inconnus gives that material another life. What may have once been overlooked is shaped into something useful, collectible, and lasting.
What We Make
Gens Inconnus creates small-batch and one-of-one pieces, including fine writing instruments, bowls, table objects, lamps, furniture, and sculptural works.
Some pieces are made for everyday use. Some are made for gifting. Some are made as statement pieces for homes, collectors, and interiors. All are shaped with attention to material, form, and finish.
